December 30, 2010

things that go together

sweet slices of red onion over rice,

plantains, tender sliver of steak,

joy and apprehension,

fear and the sharp pangs of hunger–

skewered on the tines of my fork.

December 30, 2010

like the whispering echo of laughter and warmth

the smell of you,

sharp and real.

i drive home wild and lost.

December 29, 2010

night falls and i drift,

imagined dreams coming to collide with me

on the high way.

December 26, 2010

it feels as though together

we play chess with death

or the devil.

December 26, 2010

Though now winter seeps in,

Settling frost and cracking through my bones,

Soon comes the time,

The faintest sliver of warmth through

Winter’s white shroud.

A slit of sky through cloud,

Easily lost.

December 26, 2010

now as you come to me in spring,

how hard is it to quell my expectations,

counting blood pumping,

and charting alternative courses.

December 23, 2010

how many times have we said

that you and me against the world

can be more than

bitten shoulders and hearts like stones–

faces that look west.

More than coats, hanging on pegs in the doorway,

navy blankets and polished black boots.

December 20, 2010

As a child on christmas you left me,

nose bleeding red specks

into white snow banks, piled high.

little feet,

dredge their own way home.

December 8, 2010

Like flame

you burn out my

and my lungs.
